0323-24 TikTok Issue(2)

Holly says TikTok shouldn't be allowed to operate in the US unless it separates completely from its Chinese parent ByteDance.

A deal to sell a piece of TikTok to Walmart and the US software giant Oracle is in limbo because China is blocking the export of TikTok's proprietary algorithm.

I want to see the actual terms of the deal, the platform, the app platform has got to be rebuilt

because right now it's been built by Chinese engineers, they have control and access to how the platform works, how the algorithm works.

Otherwise they're just changing the label.

Despite all the suspicion, TikTok's popularity is booming worldwide.

What is your understanding of why the President wants to ban TikTok?

So when the executive order was delivered, we very much came out and said that we disagree with the characterization, which was done without due process and was not based on facts.

And like many big tech executives, she downplays the amount and usefulness of data the platform collects.

If you were trying to find information on somebody, TikTok would not be the first place.

It wouldn't be the 100th place and it wouldn't be the 1000th place.

Your critics, they point out that under China's 2017 cyber security law, Chinese based companies are required to provide the Chinese government with access to their data.

TikTok does not operate in China.

The US data is stored here in the US and with backup in Singapore, and we have strict data access controls.

If the government which request data, certainly the Chinese government has not requested data,

and if they did, it would be an emphatic no.

The national security and cybersecurity laws of China require them to operate and build their networks in such a fashion as to where the government has unfettered access to their data, and so no, the CCP doesn't ask them for information.

They don't need to.

They have access to the information.

The clock has started ticking for TikTok and four million federal workers, the White House announcing Monday that government agencies have 30 days to delete TikTok from their devices and systems.

It's all part of a growing backlash tied to national security concerns.

Some experts worry ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, could give the Chinese government access to sensitive user data or manipulate what users in the US see.

41 states already have some sort of ban on state owned devices and networks in effect or under consideration.

Like, let me share my information with China if I want to, like, I literally could care less?

My students share my frustrations.

They don't like being told what they can and cannot do, and I think if there is a federal ban or anything we will all just shift to another platform that allows us to be creative.

The app remains one of the world's most popular pastimes, with more than twice as many downloads over the last decade as its closest rival YouTube.

So this may actually be a really good time to reconsider your relationship with this app.

Put this in perspective for us, what's the harm here?

I mean, what kind of information is TikTok collecting from users?

Your name, your phone number, your e-mail, but it also gets your IP address.

It probably gets your physical location, and it gets a bunch of biometrics.

It gets your face.

It gets your voice.

You know, it is definitely at the cutting edge of what can be collected by an app these days.

"Description" refers to a portrayal or depiction of something, often providing information about its appearance, properties, or features. For example, a person might give a detailed description of a work of art, a landscape, or a person's physical characteristics.

"characterization," on the other hand, refers to the process of developing and portraying the personality, traits, and qualities of a character or entity. It involves not only describing the physical attributes or appearance of the character, but also exploring their thoughts, emotions, motivations, and behavior. Characterization is often used in literature, film, and theater to bring characters to life and make them feel more real and relatable to the audience.

In summary, "description" focuses on providing a detailed account of the physical aspects of something, while "characterization" is concerned with revealing the inner qualities and traits of a character or entity.

- as to : is used to introduce the purpose or goal of an action, or to indicate the manner in which something is done

The phrases "as to [verb]" and "to [verb]" can have similar meanings, but there are some differences in usage and meaning.

"As to [verb]" is typically used to introduce a topic or to express uncertainty about a topic. It can also be used to indicate the intended purpose or result of an action, as discussed in my previous answer. For example:

  • As to your question about the deadline, I'm not sure. (introducing a topic)
  • The company designed the software as to improve efficiency. (indicating intended purpose/result)

"To [verb]" is typically used to express a destination or goal, or to indicate an action that is being done. For example:

- unfettered : unrestricted or unimpeded

* In "The national security and cybersecurity laws of China require them to operate and build their networks in such a fashion as to where the government has unfettered access to their data, and so no, the CCP doesn't ask them for information.", "where" is used to indicate the purpose or end result of how Chinese companies are required to operate and build their networks.

The phrase "in such a fashion as to" means that the Chinese companies are required to build and operate their networks in a way that enables the government to have unfettered access to their data. The word "where" is used here to indicate the specific circumstance or situation in which the government has access to the data - i.e., it is where the government has unfettered access to the data.

Overall, the use of "where" helps to clarify the purpose or goal of the laws and regulations related to national security and cybersecurity in China, and to highlight the extent to which the government has access to data collected by Chinese companies.

- manipulate : influence or control something or someone, often in a dishonest or deceptive manner. 조종하다

- in effect : is currently in operation or in force, and is being applied

- could care less :

The sentence "Like, let me share my information with China if I want to, like, I literally could care less" means that the speaker is expressing a lack of concern about the potential consequences of sharing their information with China. The use of "like" is an informal way of speaking and is often used as a filler word. The phrase "I literally could care less" is often used to express a lack of interest or concern, but it is important to note that the phrase is technically incorrect. The correct phrase should be "I couldn't care less," which means that the speaker has absolutely no interest or concern about the matter. However, the incorrect use of the phrase has become common in informal speech and is often used sarcastically to indicate that the speaker cares very little about the subject.

- shift : change or transition from one thing to another
